Harness Uncertainty to Unleash Your Creativity
You may fear that which you don't know, but it can be tamed and turned into innovation.
Situations that are out of my control are sure to make my anxiety spike. I’m sure many of you feel the same way too.
But there’s beauty in uncertainty as well.
By putting ourselves in a place where we can’t see our limits or know the outcome, we’re forced to embrace our imagination. We must learn to accept new outcomes, new risks, and new doubts.
In a world where everything is a given, there would be no need for personal growth or innovation.
Instead of enduring the comfort of known boundaries and outcomes, we must search for and allow uncertainty into our lives in order to grow. Enduring the discomfort of uncertainty shows us we’re capable of success.
And it’s true: creativity blesses those who open their minds to new ideas, new ways of thinking, and new paths to success.
My close friend recently started teaching herself animation.
She had no idea where to begin or what the outcome would be, but took the plunge anyway. She’s a few months in and animating scenes from our long-running Dungeons & Dragons campaign that look extremely professional. I can’t get enough of them.
What would have happened if she hadn’t embraced the uncertainty of learning this new skill?
She might be stuck doing things that don’t help her feel accomplished or fulfilled. By jumping into the deep end, she now has a creative hobby that motivates and excites her. (And is exciting to the rest of us as well — we love seeing her latest creations.)
Without change, we become stagnant, tired, and complacent.
New boundaries that arise from uncertainty require us to grow, to become flexible and adaptable. We must learn how to navigate a new obstacle course, one that requires creativity to reach the end goal.
